Activities During Medical School

Research
- Created and presented a research paper discussing the early results of an ongoing UVM COM research project studying medical students' attitudes towards patients, healthcare, and the practice of medicine. I presented the paper for an audience of area physicians at the annual research symposium "Research Innovations in Primary Care".
- Performed a summer research fellowship, sponsored by the office of the Dean of Medicine, on Learning Prevention on the Web: Case-Based Medicine. I worked with Martha Seagrave, PA-C, of the Department of Family Practice, to develop and enhance web sites which will allow medical students to self-teach medical prevention guidelines and strategies. - Co-Presented with Martha Seagrave, PA-C, a paper on Case-Based Learning on the Web, at the "Research Innovations in Primary Care" symposium.
- Published article entitled Factors Affecting Emergency Service Utilization at a Rural Community Mental Health Center Journal of Community Mental Health, April 1998 issue, p. 157 - 163. Click here for the text of that article.
- Organized research project with Dr. Allan Ramsay and the Department of Family Practice, studying the validity of computerized mini-mental status exams. Designed and created prototype web page exam. Administered manual exams to residents of Green Mountain Nursing Home.
- Designed, created, and tested the software interface for a precision set of valves used to control micropressures in a nationally respected nephrology lab with Drs. Alan Segal and Craig Hurwitz [Hurwitz CG, Hu VY, Segal AS. (2002) A mechanogated nonselective cation channel in proximal tubule that is ATP-sensitive. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 283: F93-104]

- VGC is part of a national movement, involving 10 medical schools, designed to advance broad-based ("generalist") foundations for all medical providers, regardless of specialty.
- Involved in curriculum development, medical student education, and presented various research findings
- Cyberdocs
- Active member throughout medical school, served in various leadership roles including president for 2 years.
- Cyberdocs is an organization whose purpose is to improve the use of technology in medical practice and education.
- Provided a wide variety of educational programs and resources to the students and faculty, including obtaining grants from area businesses, expanding number of computers available to medical students, working with area innovators such as Larry Weed MD
- Surgical Interest Group
- Created organization as a first-year (I thought I wanted to be a surgeon - I have no idea what I was thinking)
- Served in various leadership roles including president
- The group allowed for a closer collaboration between surgical faculty and those students with an interest in surgery, providing mentoring and other educational opportunities, including an annual suturing clinic that has now been incorporated into the curriculum.
- Woody Jackson Prints
- Initiated drive to sell "Dr. Moo" prints; worked with Woody Jackson to create, number, and sign prints, coordinated sale of all prints. Ultimately raised $6,000 for the College of Medicine to be used for original art in the newly constructed UVM COM Science Building.
- Dr. Moo has since been adopted as an unofficial logo for UVM COM

- Interviewed applicants to UVM COM weekly for 2 years
- Web Design
- Created a web site - The HTML Primer - to teach beginners to use HTML. The site was created to thank the Office of Primary Care.
Education
- Assisted with faculty development and education at annual "UVM COM Faculty Development Workshops."
- Co-taught "Interviewing Skills" class to other medical students with Alan Rubin MD; I was the only medical student involved in teaching at this level. Based on this experience, co-teaching with medical students has since become an intrinsic part of the course design.
- Created and maintained the Emergency Clinical Guide (ECG), a resource for medical students, which continues to receive thousands of "hits" a day from around the world.
- Became the first (and at the time, only) UVM medical student to serve as instructor for the "Doctoring Skills" physical examination class (part of the VGC) for first-year medical students. The class is traditionally taught by attending physicians on the UVM COM faculty
- Contributor and panel discussant to the UVM COM "Ropes Course for the Wards," a program designed to help second year medical students transition to the clinical years.
- Demonstrated history and examination techniques with a standardized patient for a videotape to be used as publicity for the UVM COM Standardized Patient Program. I was the only medical student demonstrating these techniques for this project.
- Served on an advisory panel to improve the teaching of the neurological exam to first and second year students.
- Student representative for the "First Annual Mud Season Educational Breakout", part of the UVM College of Medicine's curriculum redesign process. I was involved in designing the clinical skills portion of the new curriculum, expected to be implemented at UVM COM in 2002.
- Taught summer class for high-achiever high school students called "Careers in Medicine," a five-week elective for the Summer Discovery program. Click here for the syllabus.
Other
- Got married (the wedding has its own web site) on September 24, 2000!!
- Designed and piloted an elective month of Health Policy education with the staff of Howard Dean, Governor of Vermont.
- Musical Director and Co-Host with Joel Keenan on "The Joel & Steve Show," a bi-weekly public access television show in which current events and other topics were discussed. The show was live, unrehearsed, one hour long (8:00 - 9:00 PM on Fridays, on Adelphia Cable Channel 15), and invited unscreened call-ins from the general public on any topic.
- Drummer for "High Fiber," regular performers at Sweetwater's, Breakwaters, Nectar's, and many other Burlington musical venues.
- Performed as frequent substitute drummer for Dave Keller Blues Band
- Drummer for "Uncle Jim & The Triplets," performed almost weekly at various parties and restaurants.
- Drummer for "Mood Circus," a 6-piece experimental music workshop which met weekly, trying new arrangements and compositions by its members. We recorded a demo which met with some local critical acclaim.
- Drummer/Percussionist for the band "Fatty Acid," a progressive, improvisational musical group composed mostly of medical students. We performed at various functions.
- Drummer for a variety of jazz trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets.
- Received private drum lesson from Paul Wertico (drummer for the Pat Metheny Group)
- Studied drums privately with the best drummer in Vermont, Gabe Jarrett.
- Studied hand percussion (cungas, bongos) with percussionist extraordinaire, Stuart Paton.
- Published two-part article entitled "Lessons in Listening" in Dec. 1997 and Jan. 1998 issues of Modern Drummer Magazine (international distribution)
- Published an article in Modern Drummer Magazine entitled "Your Left Foot," describing technical aspects of hi-hat playing. It was printed in the April 1999 issue.
- A Modern Drummer article entitled The Sound of Two Hands Talking - Lessons with Paul Wertico has been accepted for publication - date to be determined.
- Interviewed as medical student and musician in Burlington Free Press article entitled Go Ahead and Make a Racket in the Living section, March 8, 1997 (Page 11A)
