Directions
To your hotel:
Take Interstate 91 into Vermont. About 90 miles later, you'll see signs for Interstate 89 North - take that. If you choose, you can
catch 89 North in New Hampshire, also.
If you're going to Stowe, you want Exit 10 - take a right at the end of the offramp. After that, consult your hotel for more specifics.
If you're going to South Burlington, you want Exit 13 - it puts you on a connector called Route 189, which will eventually deposit you in
South Burlington. Take a left at the end - you'll be on Shelburne Road. You'll stay on that for a few miles, and will eventually see
your hotel on the left.
If you're going to other parts of Burlington, you want Exit 14 - there are two varieties of this exit, named 14W and 14E. 14W takes
you towards the downtown area - in fact, it puts you directly on the main street, called "Main Street." 14E takes you towards a
different part of South Burlington, but this may be where your hotel is located if you didn't choose one of the ones we recommended.
Your hotel will obviously give you more detailed info in this case...
If you're going to North Hero, you want Exit 17 - take a
right
at the end of the offramp, and just stay on that road for many many
miles. You'll cross a large body of water (it's Lake Champlain, and you're on a sandbar - the bridge is called "Sandbar Bridge") -
just stay on this road, and eventually you'll get to North Hero (it's the third island you'll be on - you will have gone through
South Hero and Grand Isle), and you'll see a big manicured lawn on your right, with a sign saying "Shore Acres." That's probably you.
If you're going somewhere else, well, you're on your own.
Those of you coming from New York or other points west may choose to find your way to Interstate 87, which runs along the eastern
border of NY state (and therefore close to the western border of Vermont). There are many points where you can cross over, either by
bridge or by ferry, and if you choose this route, your best bet is probably to find Route 7 in Vermont and follow it north. It will
get you to Burlington - in fact, it becomes Shelburne Road when it gets to Burlington. Shelburne Road is the road where the hotels
we've recommended are located. If you're coming this way, the hotels will be on your right. If you need to get somewhere else, just
stay on Rt 7 until you get the chance to take Route 189 - this will get you to Interstate 89, either North or South. You'll be
joining Interstate 89 at Exit 13 - so if you need a higher exit, go north, and obviously, lower numbered exits will go south.
Burlington does have an international airport. If you fly in and rent a car, you'll want to take a left out of the airport, and then
at your first light, you'll take a right onto Williston Road. If you stay on Williston Road long enough, it becomes "Main Street."
(Small world, isn't it?) Before that happens, though, you'll see onramps (again, both North and South) for Interstate 89.
There are other airports within close driving distance to Burlington - we think Plattsburgh has an airport, and that's only about
40 minutes from the Lake House. Montreal has a rather large airport, which is about two hours from either the wedding or from
Burlington. And New Hampshire has a pretty large airport somewhere, which can't be far from Interstate 89 - and once you hit the
Vermont border on Interstate 89, it's about 90 minutes to Burlington or 2 hours to Grand Isle. Faster if you drive like Steve.
To the Wedding and Reception:
Unless you're already in the Islands, find your way back to Interstate 89, and then get to Exit 17. Take a
right
at the end of the
offramp - this puts you on Route 2 West. Eventually you'll cross a large body of water (it's Lake Champlain, and you're on a sandbar
- the bridge is called "Sandbar Bridge") - just stay on this road. The first land mass you encounter will be South Hero, and about 5
or 10 miles later, you'll be in Grand Isle (you'll see a sign telling you that not only are you entering Grand Isle, but also that
it's the "Beauty Spot of Vermont").
Continue on Route 2 West. You're looking for East Shore Road North, which will be on your right, about 5 miles into Grand Isle. You
will pass a multitude of similarly named roads before you get to the right one, however - don't be fooled by impostors! The
real East Shore Road North is at a blinking yellow light, just past the Grand Isle Post Office. So you want to take a right at
East Shore Road North. OK?
Stay on East Shore Road North for 7/10ths of a mile. Do not drive quickly if you plan to arrive at the wedding with all of your limbs
intact. After you've been on East Shore Road North for 7/10ths of a mile, you'll see a sign for the Grand Isle Lake House, and two
stone pillars at the entrance. Parking pretty much anywhere is fair game. You may want to pause for a moment and play a quick game
of tennis before you arrive at the Lake House - feel free.
See you there!
